Cultivating Empathy and Health: Celebrating Diabetes Awareness Month at Royat Al Ebtikar International School
At Royat Al Ebtikar International School in Jeddah, we believe in shaping future leaders not only through academics but also by fostering empathy, understanding, and community health awareness. This November, we proudly celebrated
Diabetes Awareness Month with a focus on empowering students to make informed choices and develop a deeper understanding of diabetes – a condition that affects millions worldwide, including Saudi Arabia.
On
Tuesday, November 5, 2024, we hosted an interactive
Diabetes Awareness Activity Day, specially designed for all of our students. Through engaging activities and discussions, we aimed to make learning about diabetes an educational, empowering, and unforgettable experience.
What is Diabetes? Explaining It Simply
Before diving into the activities, it was important to convey what diabetes means – especially for young minds! At its core,
diabetes is a condition where the body can’t properly use sugar for energy. By understanding the basics, students were better equipped to grasp how lifestyle choices impact health and how empathy plays a role in supporting those living with diabetes.
Educational Video and Q&A Discussion
Visuals and conversations can go a long way in making learning fun! One activity we did included
Watching an engaging educational video. Students learned about the importance of making healthy food choices, the effects of sugary snacks, and why moderation is crucial.
-
Q&A Discussion with Teachers: The interactive session dove deeper into the importance of a nutrient-rich, balanced diet featuring fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Primary and Early Years students learned to recognize the impact of sugary drinks and processed foods on blood sugar levels. They learned tips on portion control and choosing healthier snacks.
The dialogue fostered curiosity and critical thinking while reinforcing the message of mindful eating habits.
Hands-On Food Selection Challenge
After learning the basics, it was time for some hands-on fun! Students participated in an engaging
food selection challenge designed to encourage practical application of their knowledge:
- A table was set up, filled with pictures of various healthy and unhealthy food items.
- Each student received a "diner platter" and selected food items they believe would make the best meal.
- Students then compared their choices to the video’s healthy food checklist. They identified which foods are diabetes-friendly and which were not.
This activity not only made learning interactive but also built lifelong decision-making skills for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Fostering Empathy and Community Understanding
At the heart of Diabetes Awareness Month was a broader lesson: children with diabetes can lead full, active lives, just like their peers. By highlighting this message, we aimed to instill a sense of kindness, understanding, and support among students. Through fun activities and meaningful discussions, we hoped to cultivate a culture of empathy within our school community and beyond.
The Bigger Impact: Healthy Choices for a Better Future
In a country where diabetes awareness is more crucial than ever, educating children about health and empathy is vital. Activities like these inspire young learners to make smart food choices that can benefit their health while fostering a supportive environment for classmates managing diabetes.
