World Mental Health Day Recognized at Royat Al Ebtikar International School
October 23rd marked a significant day at Royat Al Ebtikar International School in Jeddah as we joined hands with schools worldwide in celebrating
Mental Health Day. The event was rooted in a single, powerful goal—to create a compassionate environment where students, teachers, and parents alike feel empowered to address mental health needs with understanding and openness.
This year’s theme was inspired by the widely loved animated movie
Inside Out. Through its relatable characters, the movie served as a springboard for helping children visualize and better understand their own emotional worlds. The activities designed around this theme encouraged students to see beyond external appearances, fostering empathy,
emotional intelligence, and the critical skills needed to navigate their inner emotional landscapes.
Why Mental Health Awareness is Crucial for Children
Creating an atmosphere that values emotional well-being is essential, particularly in primary school. When children learn to identify and express emotions early, they develop essential
coping skills that help them deal with life's challenges in a healthy way. By teaching children to recognize their feelings, we plant the seeds for resilience, empathy, and self-awareness. These qualities not only enhance their social skills but also positively shape their long-term mental outlook.
At Royat Al Ebtikar, mental health is treated with the same care and importance as physical health. This commitment reflects our mission in nurturing well-rounded individuals prepared to thrive in a dynamic world.
Emotion-Centered Activities: A Day of Growth and Connection
To help students become comfortable caring for their mental health, our Events Team curated a series of activities designed to make emotional awareness engaging and educational for our Early Years and Primary students.
Morning Stretch Yoga
Starting the day with mindfulness, students practiced simple yoga poses and breathing exercises. This activity gently introduced them to techniques for regulating emotions and reducing stress.
Emotions Art
In this creative exercise, students used colorful stickers of various sizes to represent their current feelings. This visual representation encouraged introspection and helped them explore their emotions in a non-verbal and approachable way.
Emotions Zone
Students mapped out possible transitions between emotional zones, developing an understanding of what triggers different feelings. This activity heightened their ability to reflect on emotional shifts and their causes.
Kindness Cards
Using art materials, students created handmade cards with thoughtful messages for their friends, family, or teachers. This simple act of kindness was a reminder of the emotional boost that compassionate gestures bring—not only to others but also to oneself.
Characters Hunt
Incorporating an interactive element, children went on a scavenger hunt for
Inside Out characters hidden around the activity room. Discussions followed, linking the characters’ emotions to real-life experiences. This activity deepened their emotional awareness and opened dialogue about how they can connect their personal feelings to those of others.
Zumba: Dancing the Stress Away
The celebration concluded with a lively Zumba session. Students let loose, danced, and released pent-up energy through movement, leaving the event energized and uplifted.
Building an Inclusive and Emotionally Supportive Community
By participating in
Mental Health Day, Royat Al Ebtikar International School reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safe space for children to explore, express, and manage their emotions. In a society busy with academic excellence and societal expectations, it’s essential to remind ourselves that mental health is the foundation for success and well-being.
In Jeddah and across Saudi Arabia, prioritizing mental health in schools helps shape a generation that values self-awareness, compassion, and emotional strength. These qualities are not just crucial for children but for building a more inclusive and empathetic community as a whole.
